About the Low D Whistle
The low tin whistle was first developed in the early 70s by Bernard Overton – creator of the famous Overton whistle. Since its inception, the instrument has grown in popularity, thanks to its deep, rich tones.
Although Overton whistles are no longer in production, today, there are many fantastic low whistle makers in the market. Most of the biggest brands are stocked here by Big Whistle, including the likes of Howard, Burke, Carbony, Goldie, Dixon, MK, and others.
FAQs
How do I hold a low whistle?
It can take some time to get used to holding a low whistle, especially if you have small hands. This is because on larger, lower pitch whistles the holes are further apart. The standard way of holding a low whistle is called the Pipers’ Grip, and this involves precise angling of the fingers, and the use of your middle finger pads. There are several excellent free video tutorials online if you search for “Piper’s Grip.”
What is the easiest low D whistle to play?
Some low D whistles are easier to handle than others, thanks to their “close-spacing” design. Carbony’s close-spacing whistle is very popular, but it is out range for some people’s budget. Howard’s close-spacing model is a little more affordable. If you are really struggling, you may have to stick with a high D, or in-between keys like an alto low F, low G, or low A… At least until more close-spacing low D models become available!
Which is the best low D whistle?
With many fantastic makers in the market today, it’s really a matter of personal taste as to which low D whistle is the best. High-end brands such as Burke, Carbony, Goldie, and MK are expensive for a reason! But the likes of Howard, Dixon, Syn, Lír, and Rui Gomes offer fantastic low whistles for a smaller budget.
